Course Description
Constructed Awareness® (CA) Level One is a live, interactive training designed for therapists who want to integrate mindfulness-based, trauma-informed approaches into their practice. This foundational program introduces the core principles of CA, including nonviolence, tuning, and working with the three building blocks that comprise the human experience, to help therapists enhance their history-taking, resourcing, and client self-awareness.
Using concepts such as nonviolence, nonduality, and mindfulness, you will learn an empirical and intuitive approach to therapy that utilizes awareness as the primary catalyst for change, rather than willpower. The skills learned in Level One also prepare clients to process trauma and attachment wounds using the methods taught in CA Level Two or other process-oriented approaches. Click here to view the full list of learning objectives.
Core CA principles include:
Using awareness as the catalyst for therapeutic change. Many therapists and clients believe that willpower is the key to emotional change. While willpower is helpful for task-oriented goals, it does not help regulate emotional experiences. Mindful awareness and curiosity, not effort alone, help clients truly change how they relate to themselves and others.
The human experience is constructed through three building blocks: thoughts, sensations, and external senses. In CA training, therapists learn to guide clients in expanding awareness of these building blocks, which shape emotional experiences and perceptions of self, others, and the world. Deepening awareness of these elements can transform how clients regulate and respond emotionally and relationally.
Clients naturally orient their awareness more strongly to one building block in different situations. Some clients are mentally oriented, spending more time analyzing, planning, or thinking. Others are sensation oriented, focusing on what they feel in their bodies. Some are externally oriented, directing attention to what is happening in their environment. CA Level One training teaches both structured and informal techniques for identifying a client’s orientation patterns. You will also learn a typology of six personality styles to help clients understand their tendencies and how to choose resources to deepen self-awareness and support self-regulation based on each client’s specific needs.
This trauma-informed, mindfulness-based training is a live webinar where participants and the instructor interact online. It is held on Zoom over four days, typically split into two weekends. Each session includes lecture, live or video demonstrations, practicum time, and group discussion. Click here to view the detailed agenda.
Participants receive a comprehensive training package that includes a 65-page handbook, 22 handouts and scripts, 12 guided audio files to share with clients, 20 demonstration videos, and 30 hours of continuing education for therapists. The training also offers the opportunity to practice skills live, learn directly from the creator of the CA model, and gain practical resources and skills that can be used immediately to support client growth.
