Course Description
Constructed Awareness® (CA) Level 1 is a live, interactive training designed for therapists who want to integrate mindfulness-based, trauma-informed approaches into their practice. This foundational program introduces the core principles of CA, including nonviolence, tuning, and working with the three building blocks that shape human experience, to help therapists enhance history-taking, resourcing, and client self-awareness.
Using concepts such as nonviolence, nonduality, and mindfulness, participants learn an empirical and intuitive approach to therapy that uses awareness as the primary catalyst for change, rather than willpower. The skills learned in Level 1 also prepare clients to process trauma and attachment wounds using the methods taught in CA Level 2 or other process-oriented approaches.
In this training, you will
Explore how awareness can act as the catalyst for therapeutic change, rather than relying on willpower alone.
Learn to guide clients in expanding awareness of the three building blocks: thoughts, sensations, and external senses, which shape emotional experiences and perceptions of self and others.
Identify and work with client orientation patterns, including mental, sensation, and external orientations, to tailor interventions and support emotional regulation.
Discover a typology of six personality styles to help clients understand their tendencies and choose resources that deepen self-awareness and promote self-regulation.
Prepare clients for deeper trauma processing work in future sessions using mindfulness-based, trauma-informed resourcing skills.
Core CA Principles
Awareness as the catalyst for change: Many therapists and clients believe that willpower is the key to emotional change. While willpower is helpful for task-oriented goals, it does not regulate emotional experiences. Mindful awareness and curiosity help clients truly change how they relate to themselves and others.
The three building blocks: Thoughts, sensations, and external senses form the foundation of human experience. Deepening awareness of these elements transforms how clients regulate and respond emotionally and relationally.
The CA Orientation Theory: Clients naturally orient more strongly to one building block in different situations. Some are mentally oriented and spend more time analyzing and planning, some are sensation oriented and focus on body sensations, and some are externally oriented and focus on what is happening around them.
